Nature-Based Solutions to Improve Coastal Resilience in Turner Station

Project Description:

Turner Station in Dundalk, Maryland is a low-lying area threatened by rising sea levels and coastal erosion, which have led to an increase in both the volume and frequency of flooding. Due to projected sea level rise and an increase in storm intensity, residents risk losing their homes and having to relocate.
To address these challenges, we propose an elevated wetland shoreline extending 400 feet along the shoreline of Fleming Park, which has receded over 100 feet. The wetland will have a foundation of dredged material and plants endemic to Maryland that will help reduce wave energy. A series of channels and pumps will be used to manage excess rainfall and mitigate flooding. Long term maintenance through the use of thin layer placement, placing about 15 cm of sediment every 10 years, will ensure that the coastline remains intact and above rising sea levels for decades.
