Project Description:
Mosquitoes kill about a million people every year due to mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. Furthermore, mosquitoes are huge nuisances, especially during the summer– even at regions where disease-causing mosquitoes are not prevalent. Therefore, we propose an idea of a mosquito-repelling bracelet, or MosBracelet to combat this problem. MosBracelet can be purchased by anyone who is at risk of contracting mosquito-borne diseases or simply annoyed by mosquitoes because it is easy to use and compatible to anyone with its adjustable strap. MosBracelet is a bracelet made from citronella oil, or CO-loaded Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid), or PLGA nanofibers. Mosbracelet has 96% effectiveness in repelling mosquitoes and because it is made of PLGA, it is also biodegradable. Furthermore, because we use an electrospinning method to form core-sheath nanofibers to encapsulate CO, MosBracelet has a sustained and extended release of CO to effectively repel mosquitoes. Because of our unique formulation and design, we expect to have an advantage over other competitors in the market and eventually break even at Q2 of Year 2.
