The Degradation Behavior of a Mg-1Zn-0.2Ca (wt.%) Alloy

Team: Cristina Romany, Weihs Research Group

Program:

Materials Science and Engineering

Project Description:

Utilizing volume reconstructions in a micro CT to estimate a volume loss of an as-received dilute magnesium alloy, post immersion in Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution for 14 days. This information can be converted a corrosion rate for future comparisons to the same material post thermo-mechanical processing and refinement of the grain size distribution. This will enable the verification of the viability of a thermo-mechanical processing route as a means to improve corrosion performance and increase the candidacy of the magnesium alloy for use as a biomedical implant material.
