Free Flo2: Creating a Smart Oxygen Delivery System to Match Patient Needs

Program:

Biomedical Engineering

Project Description:

Hypoxia occurs when one’s blood oxygen saturation drops below 90%. There is no bodily response meaning that SpO2 changes are unpredictable and can only be detected by direct measurement of SpO2. This is particularly difficult for patients using prescription oxygen, as current devices are difficult to understand and cannot continuously monitor SpO2, meaning it is up to these patients to manage their prescription flow rates on their own, leaving no suitable solution on the market today. Without proper oxygen flow, patients can risk sustained hypoxia which can worsen their disease state, causing lung and organ damage, brain damage, and in extreme cases result in death. FreeFlO2 is a solution to sustained hypoxia. The device includes a suite of sensors and a flow controller for automatic flow regulation and data processing capabilities, which determine a patient’s current oxygen needs based on their SpO2, heart rate, and perceived exertion. The device integrates seamlessly into standard prescription oxygen hardware and is designed for continuous use, marking a substantial innovation in the field. FleeFlO2 provides patients with optimized oxygen delivery, eliminating hypoxic episodes. our device will mark a great improvement in the quality of life for these already burdened patients.
