Monitoring Heart Health in Chimps at the Maryland Zoo

Team: Advanced MultiD, Fall’20 – Spring’21: PulsApe

Program:

Multidisciplinary Design

Project Description:

The Maryland Zoo veterinarians need a way to continuously monitor awake chimps’ cardiac health because chimps are prone to heart problems that may lead to death. Our team designed a conductive bar from which a chimp playfully hangs. The bar detects electrical signals from the chimp’s heart, which are transmitted through the hands. The electrocardiogram reading is then sent to and interpreted by zoo veterinarians.
