Exploring Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) as a Material that Promotes Bone Growth

Program:

Materials Science and Engineering

Project Description:

The aim of this project is to alter certain properties of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)(PHBV) in order to synthesize a material that is suitable for promoting bone growth within the human body. PHBV is a biodegradable and relatively biocompatible material with a very low cytotoxicity. This results in the material having the potential to be used as a biomaterial. In addition, PHBV is piezoelectric which makes it an excellent material to use for tissue regeneration purposes.
