A Novel and Effective Design to Immobilize Enzymes within Protein Crystals

Program:

Materials Science and Engineering

Project Description:

The purpose of this project was to engineer protein crystals as a platform to covalently immobilize enzymes. This project successfully devised a novel strategy to engineer protein crystals in a fashion that could effectively immobilize guest fluorescent proteins (FPs) and selectively immobilize enzymes, such as Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB). While this project focuses on protein crystals in the context of biocatalysis, the applications of protein crystals are far-stretching, including structural characterization and controlled release of drugs via drug delivery.
