Essential Qualities of Effective Leadership in Sports

Program:

Center for Leadership Education

Project Description:

Through interviews with current varsity athletic coaches and the assistant director of student athlete mental health and performance at Johns Hopkins University, a survey of student athletes, and further research, we as a team have explored the importance of leadership skills and essential qualities of an effective leader. We are dedicated to recognizing characteristics of strong leaders and how they can lead their teams to success. Learning this information allows all athletes, not only team captains, to demonstrate effective leadership skills. As the four of us are all student-athletes, we wanted to be able to apply our new knowledge of what makes a leader effective to our daily lives while also educating others.

The project photo displays different types of leadership styles at different points of time in sports. Leaders can be on or off the field, assigned the title of a leader or not, and still have the ability to make an impact on a team’s success.
