ASNE24: Build & Compete in the Annual ASNE Electric Boat Race

Program:

Mechanical Engineering

Project Description:

The ASNE24 team designed a surfboard catamaran to compete in this year’s American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) Promoting Electric Program (PEP) annual race. The 7 foot craft is powered by two 3KW brushless motors in custom housings. The craft has a series of sensors to assess its present state: attitude sensors for pitch and roll and a NEO-6M GPS module for assessing its orientation, a hollow rotary encoder, and hall effect sensors to track rudder position, and motor RPM respectively. It also has thermocouples to monitor motor housing temperature in case of overheating and current sensors to detect potential irregular draw as a risk mitigation measure; the system will shut off if it reaches extremes.
