SBD24: Leaf Blower Noise Cancellation

Program:

Mechanical Engineering

Project Description:

Leaf blowers generate unpleasantly loud noises that can be dangerous to the user and disruptive to neighbors. Working with sponsor Stanley Black and Decker, the SBD24 team developed a noise canceling device that creates significant improvement at the most annoying frequencies. The proprietary design generates destructive interference without reducing the blow force beyond the lower limit. The team also addressed design for manufacturability, iterating their design to match the manufacturer’s existing capabilities. The sponsor and team have submitted a patent application for this elegant and effective design.
