Risk Mitigation Analysis and Redesign of Asphalt-Mounted Vehicular Velocity Reduction Apparatuses
The safety, sustainability, and efficacy of vehicular velocity reduction apparatuses – which are commonly asphalt-mounted – have seen little to no improvement over the past quarter-century. Of particular relevance are the faulty designs as seen around the Hopkins Homewood campus, which endanger pedestrians and motorists alike. After implementing a holistic and systems-based approach for analyzing the risk of such apparatuses, several critical parameters were identified for the appropriate risk mitigation. Factors such as the vertical protrusion distance and breadth of the velocity reducer with respect to the mounting surface were examined and optimized through rapid prototyping and 3D computer simulations. As a result, a novel design was fabricated and sent as a proposal to the Hopkins Facilities and Real Estate for the future betterment of campus traffic.
